While serving on jury duty is often inconvenient, the right to a trial by jury is a privilege guaranteed by the constitution of the United States and the State of California. To preserve this constitutional right, it is important that you perform your civic duty and serve when called.
The law provides that the court may find a prospective juror in contempt of court, punishable by fine, incarceration or both. The court can also elect to impose monetary sanctions in lieu of imposing sanctions for contempt of court as follows:
First Violation $250
Second Violation $750
Third Violation $1,500
If you fail to appear for jury service, you must contact the Jury Commissioner’s Office as soon as possible to avoid imposition of monetary sanctions at (530) 623-1201.
